S-band Radar

S-band radar is a marine radar that operates in the S frequency band, typically around 3 GHz. On yachts, it is used to detect land, large vessels, rain cells, and other targets at medium and longer ranges. Its longer wavelength helps it keep a more stable picture in rain, spray, and sea clutter, which is why it is especially useful on larger yachts making offshore passages.

S-BAND RADAR

Compared with X-band radar, S-band usually gives less fine short-range detail and often requires a larger antenna. Its strength is target retention when weather conditions deteriorate. Bridge teams often rely on it for traffic awareness beyond the immediate manoeuvring zone, weather tracking, and maintaining a cleaner radar picture when shorter-wavelength radar becomes busy or patchy.

Its practical value depends on correct setup as much as the hardware itself. Antenna location, tuning, gain, clutter controls, and range selection all affect how well weak or distant echoes are shown. On yachts fitted with both S-band and X-band sets, the two are normally used together, with each band helping the crew read different parts of the situation more clearly.
