Beam

Beam is the width of a yacht, usually measured at its widest point. In technical documents, the exact basis may be given as maximum beam, moulded beam, or another stated measurement standard. Even small differences in how beam is recorded can matter when a yacht is being compared across drawings, specifications, or operational limits.

Beam affects initial stability, internal volume, deck arrangement, and the practical limits for berthing, lifting, transport, and yard access. Naval architects and engineering teams also assess beam in relation to hull form, displacement, and the yacht’s intended operating profile, because width influences both usable space and behavior in the water.

A wider beam can support more onboard volume and stronger form stability, but it also changes resistance, handling feel, and clearance requirements alongside. For that reason, beam is not only a brochure dimension. It is a working measurement with direct consequences for design, operation, and logistics.
