Glossary Term
Motor Yacht
A motor yacht is a yacht powered primarily by engines for propulsion. The term covers a wide range of private and commercial-style leisure vessels, from compact cruising yachts to very large luxury yachts with guest and crew accommodation. What makes it a motor yacht is the reliance on mechanical propulsion as the main means of movement.

The term usually implies a layout and operating profile built around engine-driven cruising, predictable passage planning, and easier maneuvering without dependence on wind conditions. Motor yachts may be optimized for speed, long-range comfort, shallow-water access, entertaining, or a mix of those priorities depending on hull type and intended use.
Motor yacht is a broad category, so the label alone does not describe one exact size, style, or performance level. A flybridge yacht, explorer yacht, sport yacht, trawler yacht, and many superyachts can all fall within the motor-yacht category. The useful distinction is that propulsion defines the type first, while design style and cruising purpose define the subtype.
